Singer, Actress, Comedienne, Recording Artist, Producer--is there any job that Lani Ramos won’t tackle? One of New Orleans most original talents, Lani has been a fixture in French Quarter clubs, Dinner Theater and local television since arriving in the Crescent City more than 15 years ago. Her booming voice, amazing vocal range, infectious laugh and magnetic personality have won her a large and loyal following. While Lani admits that Janis Joplin has had a major influence on her singing style, she also draws inspiration from influences across the musical spectrum including Elvis, Motown singers, classic rock vocalists, Morrison, Plant, Perry and on special occasions going further back into jazz with Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday and some old standards. Ramos currently fronts her band Big Pearl & the Fugitives of Funk and is on schedule for a November CD release party of the self-titled album, Live on Frenchmen Street

Leveraging the success of her television show, Yeah You Rite, which she describes as a ‘Dean Martin meets Carol Burnett music and comedy variety show’ based on New Orleans unique culture, Lani has assembled a cast of some of New Orleans best-known musicians and actors to bring the hit show to the live stage. “Like the television show, we want the live production to be filled with an energy that connects with our audience” she says. “Get ready for an evening filled with plenty of laughs, some great music and the electricity that comes from a live performance.” Yeah You Rite!

Shows: Big Pearl & the Fugitives of Funk can be seen at Bamboula’s on Wednesdays. Check club for listings.

  • Al 'Carnival Time' Johnson

    * use your cursor to scroll sliders up & down >

Al Johnson’s 1960 Mardi Gras anthem, “Carnival Time”, will forever be a part of the quintessential songs requested from the arsenal of New Orleans classics all year round. But without fail and, as long as God allows, you can see Al perform his anthem all over town during Mardi Gras season. Born June 20, 1939, Johnson spent his early years in Houston, but returned to New Orleans at the early age of ten settling in the Lower Ninth Ward. Johnson’s father bought him a trumpet, a piano for his sisters and a trombone for his brother. Taking more of an interest in playing his sister’s piano, Johnson learned basic chord changes in different keys and he didn’t stop from there[1] His early musical influences included Sugar Boy Crawford, Fats Domino and Smiley Lewis. He recorded his first songs for Aladdin Records when he was only 17, and subsequently recorded for Ric Records and Cosimo Matassa Studio.

The honors heaped upon Al are significant. In 2005 he reigned as King of the New Orleans Krewe Du Vieux, and in 2007 he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. In January 2008, he performed as a guest artist at the Inaugural Ball of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, sharing the stage with Deacon John Moore and his band, "The Ivories". In 2012 Johnson was proclaimed honorary "King for Life" of New Orleans' Goodchildren Social Aid & Pleasure Club. You go Al!

Shows: Al can be seen playing over local festivals and plays for seniors. Google Al Carnival Time Johnson to find out more details.
